Meet Dr. Kevin Hill

Addiction Psychiatrist, Keynote Speaker, and Author

Kevin P. Hill, M.D., M.H.S., is an addiction psychiatrist, Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Originally from Rochester, New York, Dr. Hill attended McQuaid Jesuit High School. He subsequently graduated from Skidmore College and Jefferson Medical College before training in psychiatry at the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program.

Dr. Hill earned his master’s degree in health sciences from the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale University, and he also completed the Partners Healthcare Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program. His clinical research is focused primarily on medications and behavioral interventions that might improve available treatments for those wanting to stop smoking marijuana.

Dr. Hill leads the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at BIDMC, whose mission involves clinical care, research, and education. The Division aims to help train the next generation of clinicians who treat substance use disorder through direct patient care, and it collaborates on research with experts inside of BIDMC, nationally, and internationally. Dr. Hill also sees patients in his private practice and consults for the Boston Red Sox, the National Football League, and the National Basketball Association. He is also the co-chair of the National Football League Pain Management Committee.

Dr. Hill was the recipient of a prestigious federal K99/R00 grant award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to test the efficacy of a synthetic marijuana-like compound, nabilone, as a potential medication treatment for patients with marijuana addiction. NIDA, the Brain and Behavior Research Foundations, the American Lung Association, the Greater Boston Council on Alcoholism, and the Peter G. Dodge Foundation have funded his work. In addition, he has received multiple competitive awards as an investigator, and he’s published extensively about addiction.

Over the past several years, Dr. Hill has been asked to weigh in on marijuana policy issues, such as medical marijuana and legalization of marijuana. He is committed to bridging the gap between the science and the public perception of marijuana. He has spoken nationally and internationally to students from public and private schools, parents, healthcare professionals, and organizations about marijuana science, policy, and treatment. He also speaks about alcohol and opioids.

Dr. Hill is the author of Marijuana: The Unbiased Truth about the World’s Most Popular Weed, and he co-wrote Medical Marijuana: A Clinical Handbook with his colleague Dr. Samoon Ahmad. Because of his expertise and his unique ability to effectively communicate in common-sense language, Dr. Hill is frequently asked to share his expert opinion with media outlets, and he has been named one of Boston Magazine’s Top Doctors in Addiction Psychiatry since 2018.
